Cycling outside in Winter

In colder climates, such as Canada, cycling season typically runs from April - November, and even that is for the more searious rider. In the winter months, most cyclists believe that training is something done indoors. The thought of getting winter gear and riding outside in the cold is something they would rather not do. However, when dressed properly cycling outside (as long as the roads cooperate) in 0C to -10C can enjoyable. It just takes some getting used to the idea of getting outside in the cold and some 15-30 mins of being a bit chilly before the body gets warmed up enough that the cold no longer bothers the rider ( please see seperate article on how the body and clothing work together ). However, there are times the weather is more conducive to skiing than biking. Such is the case this week in Toronto where it has been snowing almost constantly all week. This changes things and puts the thought of doing the donut ride on Saturday on the back burner. While some of us are using the weather to go skiing, some diehards refuse to let the weather get to them. They ride regardless of the weather....it's just how that they ride that is somewhat unusual. Given the roads are a mess, some take the trainer outside and ride in the snow. Here are two examples.
Adobe Flash Player not installed or older than 9.0.115!
Another example is a fellow rider in the D'Ornella's Cycling Club:
Apparently, Rider Jay rides for a hour outside and then shovels the driveway. He uses the bike for a warmup for the shovelling.
While somewhat weird, it is good to see these guys are getting in the needed miles on the "road" or frozen grass in the backyard.

Running, Cycling, Swimming - those are real sports. Baseball, Football, Basketball are just games where half the time the boys are just playing with their balls.<
